An Arkansas City couple on Tuesday donated $10,000 to the new hospital under construction two miles north of town.
Glen and Louise Smith were recognized for their generosity at today's meeting of the South Central Kansas Medical Center, held at the current hospital facility at Birch Avenue and First Street.
A plaque with their names will be placed in an in-patient room in the medical surgery area of the new hospital at Patterson Park Subdivision, west of U.S. Highway 77 at 242nd Road.
"They wanted to do something for the community," Steve Perkins, hospital CEO, told the board. "We're very excited on that."
Louise Smith said in a brief phone interview that she and her husband were "very pleased to have a new hospital in Arkansas City."
"We feel it should help the city bring a better economy, more doctors and perhaps more business," Smith said. "We would like to leave a legacy and hope others may take the hint (and also contribute)."
Smith said she moved to Ark City from Newkirk in 1994 and her husband moved here eight years ago from Cedar Vale.
"We'll probably spend the rest of our lives here," she said.
