Childers Family Donates to Hospital Healing Garden

South Central Kansas Medical Center (SCKMC) announced today a significant gift in memory of former hospital board member, Marilyn Childers, for its "Building a Future of Excellence" program. The $5,000 gift was provided by several members of the Childers family. In making the announcement, SCKMC said that the funds would be used to develop an outdoor "healing garden". The new space will be located outside the southeast wing of the inpatient rooms, providing an attractive view from the patient's rooms.

In addition to this most recent gift, the hospital's healing garden project was also named as Childer's memorial following her death in April of this year. At that time, Steve Perkins, SCKMC's CEO contacted the Childers family thanking them for the gift.

"We were overwhelmed to receive over $1,350 to assist in this effort. Your mother, Marilyn Childers, provided great service to this organization and we will insure a proper recognition of this memorial gift is placed in the garden," Perkins said.

Marilyn was appointed to the hospital's Board of Trustees to fill an unexpired term of office in 1995. She held a seat on the Board for the next ten years and served as Board Secretary, Chair of the Human Resource Committee and served on the Strategic Planning Committee.

Bob Childers, Marilyn's son, said, "She always felt it (the hospital) was a special place and was proud to say she had helped to get the new one built."

This is the latest in several major donations received by SCKMC for the Building a Future of Excellence campaign within the past year. South Central Kansas Medical Center is a governmental organization under IRC 115 established in 1951 specializing in providing a full range of healthcare to citizens in and around Cowley County, Kansas. Donations may be tax deductible. Tax advisor should be consulted as individual situations differ.
